<전시를 열며>

자연은 작가 정현영에게 창작의 절대적 성소인듯하다. 작가는 자연 순환의 법칙 속에서 인생여정의 희노애락에 대한 경험과 희망에 대한 소망을 은유적으로 감지하고 ‘빛을 머금고 반사하며 드러내는 색채와 형태’로 담아낸다. ‘선명함과 탁함, 투명함과 불투명함, 무채색과 채색 등 양 극단을 동시에 드러내면서 극단의 분리가 아닌 연결됨을, 활발히 그 양극단을 무수히 오가는 빛의 운동력으로’ 느끼고 표현한다. 그래서 움직임이 살아 있고 그 움직임은 수 천 수 만 번으로도 모자란 작은 붓질의 거듭된 입힘과 번짐의 색채와 형태로 나타난다.

그것은 지금 현재 눈앞에 보이는 그 상태로서만이 아니라 생성과 변화와 소멸의 순환, 과거와 현재와 미래까지 그 안에 담겨있는 흐름으로 표현된다. 작가는 태양 빛 가득 받으며 떨어진 잎들... 잎 진 마른 가지들의 고독 역시도 새 생명을 안에 품고 있으며 다시 싹 틔울 것임을 드러내고자 한다. “죽은 듯 보이지만 그 내면에는 봄을 준비하는 불을 품고 있는 것이다”라며...

작은 마을과 학교에서 마을 사람들과 어린 학생들과 함께 완성해나가는 벽화 작업 활동 등 자연의 순환과 사회적 관계망을 작업에 아우르며 결과와 과정으로서 작품을 담아내는 시도 속에서 생태미술 작가들과의 공통적인 작업관, 그러나 상이한 표현 방식을 경험한다. ‘모든 현상들이 상호의존하고 있으며 개인과 사회도 자연의 순환과정에 연관되어 있다는’ 생태론적 세계관. 그 시각이 정현영의 작품에 고유한 형식으로 흥미롭게 담겨있다. 이번 전시에는 여러 점의 개별화된 작업들을 모아서 설치해 ‘제주의 바다와 땅’에 스민 작가의 애정과 통찰이 느껴지는 작품을 만나게 된다.

It appears that nature is an absolute sanctum of creation for artist Grace Hyunyung Jung. The artist perceives the wishes towards experiences and hope about various emotions in life that exist within the principles of natural cycle of life in a metaphorical way and expresses them in a ‘format of color that possesses, reveals and reflects the light.’ She reveals two extreme polar elements of ‘clarity and murkiness’, ‘transparency and opaqueness’, ‘achromatic color and vivid colors’ simultaneously while feeling and expressing the dynamic energy of the light which goes back and forth between them actively whereby she is saying that they are not separated but connected. That is why her work is alive and its motion can be perceived in the millions of small paint strokes that have been repeated over and over again seen in the spreading of color and format.

All this is expressed in the flow that exists throughout the past, present and future, the repeated cycle of creation, change and extinction and not only in the state that we perceive right now. The artist tries to expose the fact that the dead leaves in the sunlight and the loneliness of the dried out branches are still nesting new life within themselves and will sprout new life again soon. She states, “it looks dead, but it is kindling the fire that will relit the spring next year deep within its bosom....”

The artist has carried out various wall mural projects with young children and village people of small provincial towns and she has embraced the natural cycle of life and social network into her own work. In her attempt to do so, she has experienced common work ethics and view with other artists but has also developed her own distinctive expressive style. Her ecological world view where ‘all phenomena is interdependent while individuals and society is interwoven within the natural cycle of life’ is channeled into her work in a very interesting way. In this particular exhibition, various works carried out in different themes have been put together and the audience will be allowed to come up close and personal with the artist’s work that has her insight and affection towards the Jeju’s seas and land permeated all over it.

<작가 소개>

정현영은 서울대학교를 졸업(서양화과)하고 펜실베니아대학교 대학원에서 석사 졸업(회화 전공) 하였다. 대학원 졸업 후 펜실베니아주와 뉴저지주에서 다수의 벽화 프로젝트를 진행하였고, 펜실베니아대학교와 ICS 장학금을 받으며 버몬트 스튜디오 등 레지던스 프로그램에도 참여하였다. 대학 및 사설 갤러리에서 개인전 및 단체전에 참여했고 뉴저지주 로완대학교 미술과 조교수를 역임하였으나 창작에 대한 뜨거운 열망과 갈증으로 교육활동을 중단한다.

영은미술관과 서울대학교 우석홀 등 미술관과 갤러리에서 개인전을 열고 단체전에도 참여하며 울산 문수월드컵경기장 컨벤션센터 벽화작업 등의 활동을 하는 가운데, 2013년 제주의 화북 2동에 있는 ‘문화공간 양’ 레지던스 프로그램에 참여하면서 제주와 깊은 인연을 맺게 되었다. ‘문화공간 양’ 레지던스에 참여하며 제6회 개인전 <불, 물에 타오르다>를 개최하였고, 레지던스 기간에 마을 사람들과 벽화프로젝트도 진행하였다. 이후 화북초교 아이들과 학교 벽화를 함께 진행하면서 지역 공동체와 끈적끈적한 소통의 경험을 하였고 제주현대미술관 거주작가로 3인전 <섬의 변주곡>에 참여했다.

“자연에 대한 관심이 경외에 가까운 깊은 애정”을 바탕으로 작가는 ‘제주의 바다와 땅’을 마르지 않는 창작의 우물로 삼아 2015년 11월 아트스페이스․씨에서 개인전 <생명의 자리: 제주의 땅과 바다>를 개최한다.

Grace Hyunyung Jung graduated from Seoul National University (BFA) and went on to study for her masters at the University of Pennsylvania(MFA, Painting). After that, she carried out various mural projects in Pennsylvania and New Jersey. She also participated in residence program including the Vermont Studio Center with scholarships from the University of Pennsylvania and ICS. She participated in various solo and group exhibitions at the university and private galleries. And also she taught as an assistant professor at Department of Art, Rowan University of New Jersey but it didn’t take her long to realize that her passion for creative work was too strong for her to continue teaching.

She has held solo exhibitions at Yeongeun Museum of Contemporary Art, Woo-seok Hall at Seoul National University and other galleries along with other group exhibitions. She kept participating in mural projects like the Munsoo World Cup Stadium Convention Center at Ulsan. In 2013, she participated in the residence program hosted by ‘Culture Space Yang’ located in Hwa-buk 1-Dong of Jeju City. It was this opportunity that made her long lasting connections with Jeju. While participating in the residence program, she held her 6th solo exhibition titled ‘WATERFIRE’ and carried out the mural project with people of Hwa-buk. After that, she also carried out the school mural project with the Hwa-buk Elementary School children and experienced an in-depth connection with the community. She went on to participate in the three persons exhibition ‘Variations of Islands’ as a residence artist of the Jeju Museum of Contemporary Art.

The ripples trembling delicate yet with depth, layers like a mountain of humble waves. Raging water roaring and rising.
A breath on a withered moment buoyantly risen up. The cohesion of eagerly desired passion. The flamed up struggle.
From the profound tremble inside to the emerging coarse raves, I wish to embrace a squirming life in the various faces of the sea.
The writhes of a bitter and delightful life. The vibrant energy of life.

Exerting a drastic blow to a serene life, agony and despair, agitation, frustration
A pain unbearable for the moment
A pause from crumbling away, a flounce of chaos
